<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compatibility between a BD (Blu-ray Disc) and a DVD (Digital VideoDisc) or a CD (Compact Disc) in an optical pickup device. <P>SOLUTION: The optical pickup device performs recording and reproducing of information by irradiating a first disk having specifications of recording and reproducing of information by using a first laser beam; and a second disk having specifications of recording and reproducing of information by the use of a second laser beam having a wavelength band different from the first laser beam and with the first laser beam or the second laser beam corresponding to respective disks. The directions of polarization of the first and the second laser beams are orthogonal. The optical pickup device is provided with a first liquid crystal element which corrects a spherical aberration by acting only on the first laser beam, and a second liquid crystal element which corrects by acting only the second laser beam, and an objective lens, the first liquid crystal element, and the second liquid crystal element are supported movably. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
