<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of manufacturing a retardation sheet which has high precision liquid crystal alignment and hardly causes defective alignment, easily at a low cost. <P>SOLUTION: In the manufacturing method, the retardation sheet having a long size roller-shaped transparent base material and having an optical anisotropic layer made of two layer or more liquid crystal compound on the half side is manufactured. The manufacturing method comprises a process (a) of applying an alignment film on the base material continuously moving and rubbing the surface of the side on which the alignment film of the base material is formed, a process (b) of applying a composition containing the liquid crystal compound on the surface subjected to rubbing, a process (c) of curing the composition applied by the process (b) and forming the optical anisotropic layer, a process (d) of repeating the processes (a)∼(c) at least one time without winding the base material and a process (e) of winding the base material. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
