PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading method which can increase an image reading speed, prevent film damage or the like, and enhance the quality of a finished print. SOLUTION: In the image reading method, a film is fed in one direction to measure the lowest density of each frame of an original image of an original document by previously measuring the quantity of light, and image reading conditions are set based on the lowest density. Next, the original image is finely scanned under the reading conditions to obtain fine scanned data. Image processing conditions are then set for image processing on the basis of the predetermined number of frames of fine scanned data. The processed output image is displayed as a certification image to be used for certification. In the method, the image reading speed can be increased and the original document can be less scratched. Further, since coincidence between the certification image and the finished print can be enhanced, the quality of the finished print can be increased. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
