PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high quality corundum single crystal and also to improve productivity by approximately uniformizing the density change in the color of the corundum single crystal by suppressing the density change in the color in the process of crystal growth. SOLUTION: In the method for growing the corundum single crystal in which a raw material of the corundum single crystal and a color developing agent are put into a crucible and the mixture is melted in an oxidizing atmosphere containing oxygen and/or carbon dioxide, then a seed crystal of the corundum single crystal is dipped in the molten liquid and the seed crystal is pulled up while rotating, a concentration of the oxygen and/or the carbon dioxide in the oxidizing atmosphere is gradually lowered for a prescribed time when the seed crystal is pulled up while rotating.
