PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of easily preventing, at low cost, a document placed on a document tray from being pressingly inserted into a pressing part. SOLUTION: This paper feeder 100 comprises the document tray 101 carrying multiple sheets of documents in a stacked state, a paper feed roller 103 feeding the documents on the document tray 101 to a carrying passage, and a separation pad 104 energized toward the paper feed roller 103 and pressed against the roller surface of the paper feed roller 103 to separate the documents by the frictional force thereof. The paper feeder also comprises a document guide 102 for guiding so that the tip of the documents placed on the document tray 101 is allowed to abut, from the lower side, on a paper feed roller surface on the upstream side of a pressing part between the paper feed roller 103 and the separation pad 104. Thus, the tip of the documents can be prevented from being pressed into the pressing part between the paper feed roller 103 and the separation pad 104 when the documents are placed on the document tray 101 to avoid double feeding.
