A buttonhole sewing machine has a clamp fitted interchangeable overhead-mounted buttonhole cutter tool (24) that is lowered to operated in conjunction with a bottom-mounted cutting tool (22). The upper tool is clamped to a support that loosely holds the cutting tool in the pre-clamped presentation. The overhead tool is held in the pre-clamped presentation by a spring-operated permanent magnet. The clamping unit has a lever-operated clamp claw that is held against the cutting tool by a screw.
