The method involves generating high harmonic wave pulses (2) by the interaction of fundamental wavelength laser pulses with a non-linear medium, especially a gas. The laser pulses of the fundamental wavelength are superimposed with shorter wavelength laser pulses in the non-linear medium, whereby the relative time positions of the pulse relative to each other can be adjusted. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: (a) an arrangement for generating high harmonic laser pulses.
