PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aluminum oxide coated tool having stable quality of a cutting characteristics or the like and a prolonged life by improving adhesiveness of both boundaries of a thin bonding layer 2 disposed between an oxide film 1 mainly composed ofαtype aluminum oxide and a nonoxide film 3 as the ground (a substrate-side film) and in direct contact with both the films, or a mechanical strength of the bonding layer 2 itself. SOLUTION: The aluminum oxide coated tool is formed of a single layer film made of one of carbide, nitride, carbonitride, oxide, oxycarbide, oxynitride, and oxycarbonitride of metals of groups IVA, Va, and VIa in the periodic table or a multi-layer film made of two or more of them, the bonding layer 2, and the oxide film 1 mainly composed ofαtype aluminum oxide on a surface of the substrate. The bonding layer 2 has a structure having at least one of needle-shaped, bar-shaped or plate-shaped protrusions, and a crystallographic axis [110] of the bonding layer 2 is almost in parallel with an axis vertical to a surface (100) ofαtype aluminum oxide which constitutes the oxide film 1 mainly.
