PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cage retaining apparatus of an elevator that eliminates the need for punching a hole in a guide rail in advance and can freely select a height position for retaining a cage. SOLUTION: The cage retaining apparatus comprises a locking section 22 coming into contact with a projection section 3a in the guide rail 3; a support member 21 having clamping pieces 24a, 24b that are in contact with a base part 3b of the guide rail 3 for clamping the locking section 22 and the guide rail 3; a chain block 27 that is locked to the support member 21 for retaining the cage 7, and the like, thus clamping the guide rail 3 by the locking section 22 and the clamping pieces 24a, 24b in the support member 21 and hence mounting the support member 21 to a desired height position in the guide rail 3 for retaining the cage 7.
