PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive connection device capable of stably performing sheet feed operation by realizing a lifting operation, a sheet feeding operation, and a sheet surface control operation which are electrically controlled by using mechanical parts such as chipped teeth and a cam, a sheet feeder having the drive connection device, an image forming device, and an image reading device. SOLUTION: In the typical configuration of this sheet feeder, the drive connection device for "disengaging" and "engaging" a drive transmitted from a motor comprises a pickup roller, a pickup control gear 215, a solenoid 232 engaged with the pickup control gear to restrict the rotation of the pickup roller, a lift control gear formed integrally with the pickup control gear 215, a swingably held liftup claw 228, and a ratchet 229 to which the drive is transmitted. The phase of the lift control gear is adjusted so that the drive can be transmitted from the ratchet 229 to the liftup claw 228 upon the peak of the drive load of the pickup roller is passed.
