PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the rapid switching performance when the compression ratio of an engine is switched over to a low compression ratio from a high compression ratio. SOLUTION: When a worm wheel 49 is rotated by a servo motor 57, a control shaft guide 40 is rotated by angles corresponding to the extent of this rotation, resulting in displacing a control shaft 39 and a control rod 37. To switch over to a low compression ratio from a high compression ratio, the worm wheel 49 is rotated anti-clockwise. The worm wheel 49 receives the spring force BF of a spring 70 in the same direction as that in the case where the worm wheel 49 is driven to the side of low compression ratio from the side of high compression ratio. The torque to drive the worm wheel 49 to the side of low compression ratio from the side of high compression ratio, is, therefore, the sum of the torque caused by the spring force BF of the spring 70 and the torque caused by the servo motor 57.
