PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical filter having target characteristics by using an optical thin film material that is actually available. SOLUTION: In this band-pass optical thin film filter, cavity layers are formed with reflection mirror layers and spacer layers for which a plurality of optical thin films having different refractive indexes are multilayered, and then, the plurality of cavity layers are formed into a multistage through connecting layers. Then, on the basis of a denominator polynomial and a numerator polynomial that indicate a transmission characteristics in the Hurwitz's polynomial of complex frequency s, and on the basis of those that indicate a reflection characteristics, a layer structure is defined in accordance with desired transmission and reflection characteristics. The layer structure is determined from the polynomial in which the constant term of the denominator polynomial is increased by a factor of 1 to 1.2 in value. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
