PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hot rolled wire rod which, just in a hot-rolled state and with an average wire diameter of less than 5.0mm, has such a high ductility as to be drawn into a wire with a wire diameter of about 1.0mm even when a heat treatment, such as a patenting treatment, is eliminated. SOLUTION: This hot rolled wire rod contains 0.55-0.95% C, 0.1-0.35% Si, and 0.2-1.20% Mn, has a pearlite structure or a pearlite-ferrite mixed structure, and has an average wire diameter less than 5.0mm. The wire rod with a length of 4m has mechanical properties satisfying formula (1): the minimum value of tensile strength (TS<SB>min</SB>:MPa)≥1000×[C]+200×[Mn]-10D+40 (wherein brackets [] means the content of each element; and D is the wire diameter (mm) of the wire rod), formula (2): TS<SB>σ</SB>×3≤100MPa (wherein TS<SB>σ</SB>is the standard deviation of the tensile strength), and formula (3): the minimum value of fracture drawing (RA<SB>min</SB>)≥30%.
