PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discrimination medium and a method of authentication in which the authenticity of an imported item or an item with a luxury brand is discriminated with a high accuracy by attaching the medium on the item. SOLUTION: The discrimination medium 10 is characterized by the fact that an image forming body 1, which brings a hidden pattern out with an interference, and a discrimination pattern forming body 2, which causes the interference on the image forming body, are strippably stuck on the discrimination medium with a sticking material layer 3, a discriminating mark appears on the surface of the image forming body when the discriminating pattern forming body is stripped off from the image forming body, and when the stripped off discrimination pattern forming body 2 is turned by a predetermined angle from the originally stuck position while the discrimination pattern forming body 2 is mounted on the image forming body, a new hidden pattern which is invisible at the original stuck state appears. The image forming body 1 may have a hidden pattern of a phase modulation. The method of authentication is based on the use of the discrimination medium. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
