PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a composition and a film which have both excellent heat resistance and excellent gas-barrier properties; a gas-barrier film having the film; and a base plate and an image display element which have excellent preciseness and durability. SOLUTION: This resin composition comprises a polyethersulfone resin consisting of repeating units represented by general formula (I) and/or general formula (II) and containing a phyllosilicate having quaternary salt(s) of a tetraalkylphosphonium compound and/or a nitrogenous heterocyclic compound. The film is formed from the resin composition. The gas-barrier film comprises the film having thereon an organic/inorganic hybrid layer obtained by a sol-gel method.
