A fibre interface controller includes an inbound data frame buffer (713); an inbound acknowledgement frame buffer (1102); and outbound frame buffer (719); an inbound frame router (1106) that directs inbound data frames to the inbound data frame buffer and routes inbound acknowledgement frames to the inbound acknowledgement frame buffer; an inbound data manager component that processes inbound data frames stored in the inbound data frame buffer; and an outbound sequence manager component that processes acknowledgement frames stored in the inbound acknowledgement frame buffer and that creates data frames for transmission to remote nodes and stores the created data frames in the outbound frame buffer (719).
