The storage and transport system has a number of storage rows, for storing goods (8) in several storage planes and a number of rail tracks (11), extending between the storage rows at the heights of the different storage planes, for movement of rail-mounted vehicles, for delivery and removal of the stored goods, with movement of the vehicles between the storage planes. Each rail vehicle has a load handling device (1-5), e.g. with a belt drive (1-3), projecting beyond the outer edge of the vehicle, for spanning the gap between the vehicle and the underside of the goods in the corresponding storage plane.
