The IC engine (10) has a fuel system (12) provided with an electric fuel pump (16), a mechanically-driven high pressure fuel pump (20) and an auxiliary high pressure fuel pump (42) which can be driven directly by the electric starter motor (34) for the IC engine, e.g. via a permanent coupling between an output shaft (35) of the starter motor and a drive shaft (71) of the auxiliary high pressure fuel pump. An Independent claim for an operating method for a direct fuel injection IC engine is also included. |
