PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device reductive in normally reflected light from a reflecting element and capable of obtaining display with good visibility by forming a light-controlling means between an optical reflection element and a liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: A louver 7 is used as a light-controlling means between a light- scattering liquid crystal element and a light-reflecting element 1. The louver 7 has laminar light-shielding layers 8 as shown in Figure so as to absorb mainly the light beams propagating in the normal line direction of the light-shielding layers 8. Therefore, the reflected light does not propagate in the normal line direction and the observer can see the surface color of the light-shielding layers 8 in the observer side. When the light-scattering liquid crystal element 2 is in a scattering state for light, the light entering through the light-shielding layers 8 to the liquid crystal layer is scattered and observed so that enough brightness can be obtd. To further increase the brightness when the liquid crystal element 2 is in a scattering state, back surfaces (the surface in the reflecting layer side) of the light-shielding layers 8 are preferably made of reflecting plates having high reflectance or light-scattering reflecting plates. |
