PURPOSE: A method for preparing 4-halomethyl- 2-oxoquinoline is provided, thereby improving the stability of the preparation method, reducing the preparation costs, and preparing high purity 4-halomethyl- 2-oxoquinoline in higher yield. CONSTITUTION: A method for preparing 4-halomethyl- 2-oxoquinoline of the formula(1) comprises the steps of: (a) dissolving 4-methyl-2-oxoquinoline in an organic solvent to prepare a 4-methyl-2-oxoquinoline solution; (b) adding selenium oxide(SeO2) into the 4-methyl-2-oxoquinoline solution; and (c) adding halogen acid into the 4-methyl-2-oxoquinoline solution, wherein X is halogen; the solvent is selected from tetrahydrofuran, diethylether and isopropylether; the amount of selenium oxide added is 0.01 to 1.0 wt.%; and the amount of halogen acid added is 0.1 to 10 wt.%.
