1,170,186. Making relay contacts. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 21 Aug., 1968, No. 39925/68. Heading B3A. A method of making an electrical contact includes welding the end of a coated contact wire 1 to a strip of spring metal 2, severing the welded end 4 of the wire from the remainder thereof by means of a pair of pinching cutters to leave a chisel ended stud welded to the strip and shaping the stud by impact of a shaped die. The action of the cutters draws the coating towards the apex 5 of the cut so that the whole surface of the contact, which may be hemispherical in shape, is covered with the coating. The contact wire 1 is of gold coated silver and only the silver is welded to the spring 2, the gold contacting the spring around the circumference of the weld. |
