The barge, having a length of at least 100 m and a width less than 50 per cent of its length, has cavities (21, 22, 23, 24) in its sides and/or ends. The cavities are located at least partly in the submerged portion of the barge's hull, and are preferably in pairs in opposite walls, allowing water to pass through the free spaces (33) in the hull when the barge is in heavy seas. Each cavity is delimited by lateral bulkheads (32) and upper and lower decks. The depth of the cavities is between 25 and 50 per cent of the height of the hull.
