The present invention relates to a process for preparing alignment layers with predetermined azimuthal anchoring properties, to be used in liquid crystal devices. The invention relates to the modification of the substrate's topography by means of an abrasive jet in oblique incidence. Using this process, one can obtain alignment layers with a predetermined azimuthal anchoring orientation and a predetermined azimuthal anchoring strength.
