PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine more securely stratifying combustible mixture and EGR gas in a cylinder, improving ignitionability and securing good combustion. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine has a tumble flow generating means 6, 11, 12, 13 for generating a first tumble flow of the combustible mixture and a second tumble flow of the EGR gas rotating in the reverse direction of the first tumble flow in other area of the cylinder, and an ignition plug 9 provided in a flow area of the first tumble flow. The tumble flow generating means may include a intake port 6 having a partitioning plate 11 provided so as to introduce separately air or the combustible mixture and the EGR gas into the cylinder, and at least two cavities 12, 13 provided on the top surface of a piston and generating the first tumble flow and the second tumble flow along the cavities.
