PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately discriminate the type of an optical disk, to reproduce high-quality music when an SACD is loaded, and to reproduce standard-quality music when a current CD is loaded in an optical disk reproducing apparatus. SOLUTION: A focus search is made by using a DVD pickup and a CD pickup to detect focus error signals. At this time, when focus error signals E1, E4 at a normal level are detected, it is discriminated that a loaded optical disk is an SACD, and data on a high-density layer are read and reproduced by the DVD pickup. When a focus error signal at a normal level is detected only in a focus search by the CD pickup, it is discriminated that the loaded optical disk is a CD, and data are read and reproduced by the CD pickup.
