PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a stable image with a more compact image recording apparatus in an image forming method for forming an image by laser exposure and heat development. SOLUTION: The image forming method uses an image recording apparatus comprising a laser irradiation means for subjecting a heat developable photosensitive material comprising a photosensitive silver halide, a non-photosensitive organic silver salt, a reducing agent and a binder on the same face of a support to scanning exposure with laser light, and a device for transporting the heat developable photosensitive material in the direction of sub scanning and guiding it to a heat developing section. The maximum sensitivity of the heat developable photosensitive material is at a wavelength of 600 to <700 nm and the distance between a scanning line by the laser irradiation means and the inlet of the heat developing section is≤50 cm.
