PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material testing machine which is easily operated as verifying the state of a test piece etc. and in which tests are started and halted and manual operations are performed with satisfactory workability while safety is secured. SOLUTION: The material testing machine is provided with a portable hand controller 30 provided with switch groups 31a-31c and 32c-32e for providing drive commands for load mechanisms 13 and 14. By providing the hand controller 30 with digital display parts 34a and 34b for displaying a test force acting on the test piece and a distortion detection value every moment, while an operator grasps the state of the test piece W and the testing machine, it is possible to operate the testing machine at an arbitrary location and make safety and operability satisfactory.
