PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate origin signals, based on a signal read from a scale. SOLUTION: A displacement detecting apparatus comprises a first region 12a, where position information is recorded with a specific interval; a movable scale 12, where a second region 12b in which position information is recorded with an interval that differs from that of the first region 12a is formed; a first reading section 10 for reading position information recorded at the first region 12a; a first phase detection section 14 for detecting the first phase, based on position information read by the first reading section 10; a second section 11 for reading position information recorded at the second region 12b; a second phase detection section 15 for detecting the second phase, based on position information read by the second reading section 11; a phase comparison section 16 for comparing the first and second phases; and an origin signal generation section 17 for generating origin signals according to the comparison result of the phase comparison section 16.
