PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing sterols such as zymosterol, cholesta-7,24-dien-3Δ-ol or biosynthetic compound derived therefrom. SOLUTION: Sterols are separated from a cultured product produced by culturing Eumycetes (yeast or fungi) metabolically engineering modified in a manner to lower the activity of both sterol C-22 desaturase and sterol C-24 methyltransferase and highly express sterolΔ7-reductase and/or sterolΔ5-desaturase.
