PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for operating an answering machine when an answering machine function is not set in a mobile phone having the answering machine function are provided to allow a user to easily make a call and recording by performing an answering machine function by pressing a button. CONSTITUTION: A user records greetings or a reason why he/she cannot answer a call through a greetings recording unit(205) and stores it in a greetings storing unit(206). When an antenna(201) senses a signal of a call made from the other party, a mobile phone makes a bell sound or vibration for user's recognition. The user presses a button to transfer a signal for receiving the call to a call control signal generator(203). The call control signal generator(203) connects the call and transfers the signal to an answering machine function controller(204). The answering machine function controller(204) announces greetings to the other party through a greetings reproducing unit(207). After the recorded announcement is completed, a recording start alert sound is generated, and then the other party voice recording unit(208) is operated to record a voice of the other party. When the other party completes recording and hangs up the phone, the call control signal generator(203) informs the answering machine function controller(204) about the call termination. The answering machine function controller(204) sends a signal to the other party voice recording unit(208) to terminate recording and sends a signal to the other party voice storing unit(209) to store the recorded content of the other party. The user can listen to the recorded voice of the other party through the other party voice reproducing unit(210).
