PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersion adjusting apparatus and method that facilitate adjustment of wavelength dispersion or dispersion slope to a desired value at low cost.

SOLUTION: In a dispersion adjusting apparatus 100, light in the transmission band of a diffraction grating 110A is inputted through an input terminal 101 and passed through the diffraction grating 110A, with the passed light outputted from an output terminal 102. As a result, the light passing through from the input terminal 101 to the output terminal 102 is adjusted in the wavelength dispersion or the dispersion slope. The adjustment of the wavelength dispersion or the dispersion slope can be varied depending on the tension of the diffraction grating 110A imparted by holding sections 121, 122 or on the temperature of the diffraction grating 110A adjusted by a temperature adjusting section 130.
