PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal head printer unit comprising a thermal head and a thermal transfer ribbon tape and employing a simple mechanism for displacing the printer unit in the widthwise direction of the thermal transfer ribbon tape. SOLUTION: The printer unit 10 comprising a thermal head 9 and a thermal transfer ribbon tape 14 is further provided with a motor 6 for displacing the thermal head 9 in the widthwise direction of the thermal transfer ribbon tape 14, and a position sensor 12 for detecting the position of the printer unit 10. A driver is arranged to be controlled based on a position signal from a position detector. The printer unit 10 meshes a rack gear 2 provided on the fixing metal base 1 side and is displaced in the widthwise direction of the thermal transfer ribbon tape 14 by means of a pinion gear 3 being rotated by the motor 6.
