PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a pseudoboehmite moisture conditioning material excellent in steam absorbing and discharging characteristics at a low cost without performing a high-temperature heat treatment indispensable heretofore in the conventional moisture conditioning material. SOLUTION: An alkaline aqueous solution and an acidic aqueous solution at least either one of which contains aluminum ions are subjected to neutralization reaction at a pH 7-10 and the obtained product is dried. The drying temperature of this product is preferably 20-150°C. By this method, the moisture conditioning material comprising a pseudoboehmite powder with a pore size of 30 nm or less is obtained. This pseudoboehmite moisture conditioning material has a moisture absorbing and discharging capacity such that a steam absorbing amount is not less than 45% within a relative humidity (RH) range of 0-90% and a steam discharging amount is not less than 40% within a relative humidity (RH) range of 5-90%. Further, this moisture conditioning material is characterized in that the sudden rising part of a steam adsorbing isothermal line has steam absorbing and discharging characteristics within a 40-90% RH range.
