PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide lightweight artificial soil composed of a porous material, excellent in water retentivity, free from collapsing and blocking pores, usable for a long time, capable of firmly fixing trees and having also insulation effectiveness. SOLUTION: The artificial soil comprises a container having at least a basic frame and at least one side surface made of an easily degradable membranous body. Plenty of natural porous materials each having open cells and percentage of void of≥20% are filled in the inside of the container. The method for greening rooftops comprises arranging on a rooftop plenty of the artificial soil on which plants are planted or to be planted afterwards and filling earth or the natural porous materials also between each of the artificial soil.
