PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure appropriately a display opportunity of images showing the front sideward area and the immediate front downward area of a vehicle, immediately after starting of the vehicle. SOLUTION: The device comprises: a camera 22 shooting both the front sideward area and the immediate front downward area of the vehicle; and front sonar sensors 32, 34 detecting obstacles existing within the specified area near the front of the vehicle. Immediately after starting of the vehicle, both the image of the front sideward area and the image of the immediate front downward area of the vehicle taken by the camera 22 are displayed simultaneously on a display 26, regardless of the results of the detection by the front sonar sensors 32, 34. Then, after a predetermined time has passed, when an obstacle is detected by the front sonar sensors 32, 34, only the image showing the immediate front downward area of the vehicle is displayed on the display 26. When no obstacle is detected by the front sonar sensors 32, 34, only the image showing the vehicle front sideward area of the vehicle is displayed on the display 26. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
