PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a lower fatty acid ester, which method suppresses the lowering of catalyst activities caused by termination of the reaction, thereby stably maintaining high catalyst activities. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing a lower fatty acid ester by reacting a lower fatty acid with a lower olefin in the presence of a solid acid catalyst, the feed of the lower fatty acid to a reactor containing a catalyst layer is ceased after the feed of the lower olefin is ceased when ending the reaction; otherwise, an inert gas is fed before the termination of the feed of the lower olefin, subsequently the feed of the lower olefin is ceased, and the feed of the lower fatty acid is ceased when the concentration of the lower olefin at the outlet of the catalyst layer is 1 vol% or lower.
