PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microscopic droplet detector, which can realize the detection of a jet state at a high S/N ratio by enabling the definite determination of the optical detection of a droplet jetted from a nozzle, and an inkjet recording apparatus. SOLUTION: This microscopic droplet detector comprises a droplet detecting means wherein a light-emitting device and a light-receiving device are arranged in such a manner as to cross a traveling passage of the droplet (a) jetted from the nozzle, and which is constituted so that the droplets (a) can exist in the traveling direction of the droplet (a); a jet control means for controlling a jet of a droplet group A which is composed of the droplets (a) from the nozzle; and a jet-state detecting means for detecting the jet state of the droplet (a) by detecting the droplet group A. Idle periods, during which the droplets (a) are not jetted, are provided before and after the droplet group A. The idle period satisfies the condition:β≥L/V. In the condition,βrepresents the idle period; L (m) represents a distance along the traveling direction of the droplet group A in the range of the detection of the droplets (a); and V (m/sec) represents a speed when the droplet (a) crosses the range of the detection.
