摘要 <p>A film-forming material for treating glass fibres (see Group IV (c)) comprises a mixture or the reaction product of a polyester having free hydroxyl groups and an organo-silane having an unsaturated carbon-to-carbon linkage. Hydrolysable groups in the silane react with hydroxyl groups in the polyester whereby a silane/polyester reaction product is formed with elimination of hydrogen chloride if the hydrolysable groups are chlorine and an alcohol if the hydrolysable groups are alkoxy. Specified polyesters are polypropylene itaconate, polyethylene maleate and polyethylene maleate phthalate whilst specified silanes are diallyl diethoxy silane, triethoxy allyl silane, vinyl trichloro silane, divinyl diethoxy silane, vinyl triethoxy silane, vinyl trichloro silane together with beta-chloroallyl alcohol to form betachloroalloxyvinyl-silane, dimethoxy dicrotenyl silane, triethoxy methallyl silane and dichloro ditiglylsilane. The polyester-silane combination may be diluted with an organic solvent (e.g. toluene or acetone) or dispersed in aqueous media containing ammonia before applying it to the fibres. The coated glass fibres may be used in the manufacture of laminates (see Group VIII) using an unsaturated polyester as laminating resin whereby coupling occurs between the coating on the fibres and the unsaturated polyester. The component of the unsaturated polyester may be maleic, fumaric, itaconic or phthalic acid and ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol or allyl alcohol and the polyester may be used in combination with butadiene or styrene. In Example 5, glass fibres coated with a reaction product of polyethylene maleate and vinyl triethoxy silane are distributed in allyl alcohol and the mass hardened by means of benzoyl peroxide.ALSO:Glass fibres in the form of yarns, strands or fabrics are made more receptive to colouring agents and resinous or rubbery material by treating them with a filmforming material comprising a mixture of or the reaction product of an unsaturated polyester and an organo-silane having an unsaturated carbon-to-carbon linkage. The polyester-silane combination may be diluted with an organic solvent, e.g. toluene or acetone, or dispersed in an aqueous medium containing ammonia before applying it to the fibres. Application may be made by dip coating, flow coating or roller coating followed by drying in air or in an oven heated to 150 DEG -450 DEG F. Preferably application is made whilst the fibres are being formed, but if application is to be made to already formed fibres any previous coating or size is first washed off or burnt off, e.g. at 800 DEG F.</p>
