PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved system and method for extending the dynamic range of an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter. SOLUTION: The system includes a transducer 11 which provides an analog electric signal associated with physical characteristics to be measured. A signal from the transducer is applied to a preprocessing circuit 12. The preprocessed signal is applied to the first input of an adder 13. An output of the adder is connected to an input of the A/D converter. The operation of the A/D converter is monitored by a digital signal processing and control circuit 16 which applies an offset control signal to the second input of the adder. The offset control signal is put together with the analog signal in the adder. The A/D converter 14 and the processing/control circuit 16 compose a processing unit 17. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
