PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the wear resistance of a sliding face of a cylinder and reduce the manufacturing cost of the cylinder in a hydraulic automatic tensioner. SOLUTION: The cylinder 1 with a built-in hydraulic damper mechanism 2 having a piston 3 is made of aluminum alloy and molded by die casting, and an oxidation layer 20 is formed on the casting surface to improve the wear resistance. Further, the cylinder 1 is used in as-cast state without cutting processing to reduce the manufacturing cost. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
