PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst system for carrying out excellent olefin living polymerization, to provide a polymerization method and to obtain a polyolefin having a narrow molecular weight distribution. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyolefin comprises, in olefin polymerization in the presence of a catalyst for olefin polymerization composed of (A) a transition metal compound in which Mulliken Charge (MC) of a central metal by DFT calculation of a corresponding methyl cation complex is in the range of 1.5<MC<3 (atomic unit) and (B) at least one compound selected from (B-1) an organoaluminumoxy compound and (B-2) a compound to be reacted with the transition metal compound (A) to form an ion pair, carrying out the olefin polymerization in the presence of (C) an organic compound in which a HOMO energy level (ME) by DFT calculation satisfies -7.5<ME<-6.5 (eV).
