<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which the width or the forward end of a recording medium can be detected accurately by preventing contamination of a sensor. <P>SOLUTION: When an instruction for performing cleaning operation is transmitted to a carriage 20, the carriage 20 moves to a cleaning region toward a bumper member 25 (downstream in the direction of arrow B). When the carriage 20 arrives at the cleaning region, a bumper plate 44 touches the bumper member 25. When the carriage 20 moves downstream in the direction of arrow B, a coil spring 50 contracts and a cleaning unit 40 moves upstream in the direction of arrow B by a distance corresponding to contraction.
