PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a reproduced image in an easy-to-see state by effectively using the area of a display screen. SOLUTION: An image display apparatus is provided with a memory card 29 for acquiring images of different aspect ratios, a display unit 26 which displays the acquired image, the display unit having a display screen of a different aspect ratio, a vertical/horizontal direction sensor 30 which detects the direction of the display screen of the display unit 26, and a control unit 22 which changes the display direction and the size of the image to be displayed at the display unit 26 on the basis of the result of detection by the vertical/horizontal direction sensor.
