PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rolling/sliding contact component capable of more extending its service life in the case of using a lubricant oil in which foreign matter is intruded. SOLUTION: A worked rolling/sliding contact component material formed into a prescribed shape from steel is heated at 930 to 970°C for≥1.0 hr in an atmosphere having a carbon potential of 0.9 to 1.1%, so that existing carbide is melted into a matrix. Next, the temperature is reduced to 830 to 900°C. Further, the carbon potential in the atmosphere is controlled to 0.6 to 0.8%, and, after heating for≥0.5 hr, rapid cooling is performed. Then, heating is performed at 830 to 870°C in a carburizing atmosphere in which the carbon potential is 1.1 to 1.6% so as to cause carburization treatment, and, after that, rapid cooling is performed. In this way, the grain size number of old austenite crystal grains in the surface layer part in the range from the surface to a depth with the maximum shearing stress applied is controlled to≥11.
