PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide nonaqueous electrolyte for an electric double layer capacitor and an electrochemical capacitor which can improve characteristics of capacitors by restraining generation of an electrolyte decomposition gas due to the repetition of charge/discharge or the like. SOLUTION: Diphenyl is added in the nonaqueous electrolyte for the electric double layer capacitor in which an electric double layer formed at the interface between a polarizing electrode material and the electrolyte is used as a storage device or the electrochemical capacitor, in which metal oxide and conductive high polymer is used as an electrode material.
