PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new sulfur-containing unsaturated carboxylic acid polymer, its use and a production method. SOLUTION: In producing an unsaturated carboxylic acid polymer by polymerizing an unsaturated carboxylic acid in the presence of a polymerization initiator, the sulfur-containing unsaturated carboxylic acid polymer whose weight average molecular weight (Mw) is in the range of 500-4,500 and molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) is≤2.5, is obtained by jointly using a persulphate and a bisulfite for the polymerization initiator in their total used amount of≥10 g equivalent per one mole of a used amount of the unsaturated carboxylic acid, wherein a used amount of the bisulfite is controlled so as to share≥8 g equivalent, and by controlling the polymerization temperature in the range of 25-99°C. The sulfur-containing unsaturated carboxylic acid polymer is used as an essential component for a detergent builder and for a dispersing agent for kaolin. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
