PURPOSE: A gelled separator and an electrochemical cell using the separator are provided, to improve ion conductivity, electrochemical stability, mechanical properties, electrolyte solution maintenance and adhesive strength to an electrode. CONSTITUTION: The gelled separator is prepared by coating a porous polymer which can be gelled by an electrolyte solution, on at least one surface of a separator porously. Preferably the porous polymer is at least one selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxide, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinylidene fluoride, poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene, poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), poly(vinyl chloride) and polybutadiene. The polymer used as a separator is at least one selected from the group consisting of an olefin-based resin such as polyethylene and polypropylene, a fluoride-based resin such as polyvinylidene fluoride and polytetrafluoroethylene, an ester-based resin such as polyethylene terephthalate, and cellulose-based nonwoven.
