PURPOSE: A method for producing 6-methyl erythromycin A is provided, thereby significantly reducing the amount of by-products, and easily removing them. CONSTITUTION: A method for producing 6-methyl erythromycin A represented by the formula(1) comprises the steps of: (1) reacting a compound of the formula(3) with methylating agent in the presence of base in solvent to prepare a compound of the formula(4); and (2) deprotecting the compound of the formula(4), wherein R is alkyl; the solvent is selected from dimethyl sulfoxide, N,N-dimethyl formamide, hexamethyl phosphorylamide and a mixture thereof; the base is selected from potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium hydride, potassium hydride, triethylamine, trimethylamine, isobutylamine, potassium butoxide, sodiumbistrimethylsilylamid, potassiumbistrimethylsillylamide and butyllithium; and the methylating agent is selected from iodomethane, bromomethane, chloromethane, dimethylsulfate, methyl ρ-toluene sulfonate and methylmethanesulfonate.
