PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the back of a transfer material from being soiled with toner sticking to a secondary transfer roller from an intermediate transfer belt. SOLUTION: Since an amount of toner attached to the secondary transfer outer roller increases with the number of transfer materials used for secondary transfer, a cleaning bias to be applied is also increased. The integrated current of a normal bias during ATVC control, a normal bias during the secondary transfer, and a forward bias at the completion of a cleaning sequence is an integrated currentΣI<SB>+</SB>Δt using a total amount of charges in which a current is multiplied by an applying time. The integrated current of a reverse bias is obtained by the product of current I<SB>-</SB>applied and applying time T. In the case, a value that does not exceed 25% of the integrated currentΣI<SB>+</SB>Δt of the normal biases is set as the integrated current I<SB>-</SB>×T. Additionally, the current<SB>-</SB>applied is set to 30μA or less and the applying time corresponds to the time required for a roller to make one rotation. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
