PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical alignment method by which a sufficient pretilt angle to be used for a vertical alignment mode can be developed by one-time flat exposure and the substrate is not required to be inclined as a method of developing a pretilt angle in an optical alignment method. SOLUTION: In the optical alignment method, while an optical exposure pattern comprising a plurality of lines having certain width and keeping certain intervals is continuously and repeatedly formed on a polymer film surface, the polymer film surface is exposed trough the optical exposure pattern so as to give the liquid crystal aligning ability to the polymer film surface. The method results in formation of a liquid crystal display element usable in the vertical alignment mode in which the aligning ability is difficult to obtain by conventional aligning processes.
